Iranian Doctor in South Carolina
About the Doctor
Dr. Ramin Eskandari is a board-certified pediatric neurosurgeon and an associate professor of neurosurgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He serves as the Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery and holds adjunct appointments in the Departments of Pediatrics (Child Neurology), Surgery (Plastic Surgery), and Immunology/Microbiology. Dr. Eskandari is nationally recognized for his expertise in the surgical treatment of brain and spinal disorders in children, as well as his commitment to advancing research in pediatric hydrocephalus and brain injury.
Raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dr. Eskandari earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology/Neurobiology from the University of Michigan. His academic journey also included extensive international experience. He lived in Switzerland after college, working at a sports camp for children, and later traveled internationally while pursuing his Master’s in Medical Science. During this time, he engaged in research on artificial vision and hydrocephalus—projects that would shape his future focus in pediatric neurosurgery.
Areas of Expertise
- Surgical management of pediatric brain and spine disorders
- Endoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus, brain tumors, and other neurological conditions
- Minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures
- Development of novel therapeutic strategies for neonatal brain injury
Dr. Eskandari founded South Carolina’s first pediatric hydrocephalus and brain injury research laboratory in 2014. His lab has received support from institutional, state, and philanthropic funding sources. Currently, his research team has developed an innovative cell culture model for elevated intracranial pressure and is working on a new medical therapy to prevent progressive brain damage in newborns with brain hemorrhage.
